French Men of War, 1739

Transcription of extract from Salisbury Journal 14th August 1739 reads: "By a letter from Pool dated the 6th instant we have an account that the "Samuel and Hannah", Captain Vallis, who arrived there that day from London, met with a French Man of War off Beachy and another off Fairlight standing to the eastward. He supposed them to be ships of 50 guns."

Transcription of extract from Salisbury Journal 4th September 1739 reads: "Pool. "The Three Friends" John Barret is arrived at Lisbon from San Sebastien. The Captain reports that he met with 5 sail men of war cruising off Cape Finister under the command of Sir Chalaner Ogle, who had taken a vessel of about 200 tons with Genoese colours, laden with ammunition etc for the Spanish in Galicia."

Transcription of extract from Salisbury Journal 2nd October 1739 reads: "A vessel belonging to Pool- Glead, Master, bound from Newfoundland to Bilbao, was lately taken off Cape Ottigal in Galicia by a ship of 50 guns bound to the Caracas from St. Sebastian to which last place was sent in a prize."
