French visitors at Poole. Up aloft on the yards of the topsail schooner "l'Etoil". French officer navel cdets get a good veiw of England as their ship is about to enter Poole Harbour on a vist in the last few days of July, 1956. They were met and welcomed by the Mayor and Admiral of Poole, Councillor C.W. Wells, in company with the Sheriff, Councillor A.J. Stokes. "l'Etoil" displaces 227 tons and is 128ft. long. Charter of Charles II 1666, held at Dorset History Centre (DC-PL/A/1/14). Confirmation of the 1568 charter with additional privileges including the election of four constables; the election of Anthony Ettricke [of Holt Lodge, Wimborne] as recorder for life; the major, recorder and 4 burgesses to elect JPs; the right to hold the court of Quarter Sessions; the sheriff and water-bailiff to be elected from the in-burgesses; fish caught in the liberty to be sold at the Fish Shambles; rates to be levied to support bridges, walls and banks; all offices to take the oath of allegiance and supremacy; and the recorder and town clerk to be appointed by the King.
